If you are noticing that your heating system is having less of an impact in the evenings, or the house is struggling to sustain heat in general, this may be an issue with your windows. Here are a few signs to look for when your windows may need repair or full reinstallation.
Damage that requires replacement
Rotting frame damage- This is one of the easier signs of necessary replacement notice. Also, if you never had the windows installed yourself, and they’ve been the same since you purchased the home, they have a much higher probability of rot. Fortunately, this is easy to identify and allows for quick replacement.
This usually comes down to how effectively they were installed, as well as the quality. Unfortunately, neither of these issues has anything to do with you as a homeowner. Although frustrating, it’s important that you get the issue resolved as soon as possible.
Condensation damage over time- This is usually found in colder climates, or areas where excess rain evaporates slowly. When left stagnant, condensation damage sets in slowly, but can be quite harmful to the window frames. This damage is very difficult to amend and is often more cost-effective to replace rather than repair.
Jammed hardware – these issues have the potential to be resolved in an isolated incident. If you recently found the hardware on your window to be jammed, not allowing you to open the window, then you may be able to salvage it. Unfortunately, these issues are often left unattended until they need a full replacement.
Cracked, warped, or broken window glass – this is a sure sign that your windows are in need of repair or replacement.
Drafty rooms and cold spots near windows – if you feel a chill creep into the room when you’re near the window, then it means air is escaping from somewhere and needs to be sealed up.
Condensation between glass panes – this is a sign that the seal has been compromised and the window isn’t doing its job of keeping the air out.
